International Marketing

Growing New Markets

Exporting soybeans to other countries is important to Ohio’s farmers — about half of the soybeans grown in Ohio are exported — which is why expanding international markets is important to the Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) and soybean checkoff.

Introducing international audiences who have little understanding of the sustainability of Ohio produced soybean products remains a priority. OSC is working to create forums where soybean buyers can meet with Ohio exporters, farmers and universities to discuss Ohio’s soybean quality and address any concerns soybean buyers may have. Whether through trade team visits, market research or customer outreach, OSC is dedicated to expanding the global market for Ohio’s soybeans.

Animal Agriculture

Ohio livestock producers can achieve superior animal performance with affordable, accessible, and nutritionally rich soybean meal. U.S. soybean meal, a top protein source, offers a "total value package" of essential nutrients, promoting healthier animals and more profitable operations.

Biodiesel

About Biodiesel

Made from a combination of soybean oil, recycled cooking oil and animal fats, biodiesel is the first and only fuel commercially available nationwide to meet EPA’s definition of an Advanced Biofuel, meaning that it reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent. In 2005, soybean oil use for biodiesel was just 675,000 pounds. Biodiesel consumption in 2017 required 6.2 billion pounds of soybean oil or the oil from 532 million bushels of soybeans.
This increase in demand for soybean oil has led to an increase in supply for soybean meal, lowering meal prices by as much as $48 per ton, which helps animal agriculture, the U.S. soybean industry’s No. 1 customer.

Biodiesel Means Added Value.

Biodiesel is better for the environment, better for the economy and better for Ohio farmers’ bottom line — it adds 63 cents in value to every bushel of soybeans. That’s why the Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) and Ohio’s soybean checkoff work closely with the National Biodiesel Board to support efforts to increase biodiesel demand.

Partnerships

Through a partnership with Clean Fuels Ohio, the Ohio Soybean Council is able to focus on fleet outreach and communication. Using educational resources, we’re able to expand biodiesel use across Ohio.
Collaboration efforts are also made with state agencies and purchasing decision makers to discuss how fleets can benefit from the usage of biodiesel.
