Ohio Soybean Checkoff at Work: Driving Demand, Supporting Farm Profitability

From research to market development, the Ohio Soybean Council is working to increase profit opportunities for soybean farmers across the state.
At the height of the growing season, Ohio soybean farmers are making decisions every day to improve efficiency and strengthen their operations. The Ohio Soybean Council is working to deliver value through targeted investments that support profitability on the farm. By advancing research, developing new uses for soy, and strengthening both domestic and global markets, checkoff efforts are centered on real, measurable outcomes.
Here’s how the Ohio soybean checkoff is delivering value across demand, research, and education.
Building Demand
Building demand is a priority for increasing profit opportunities for Ohio soybean farmers. Through partnerships with Airable Research Lab, checkoff investments are helping develop and commercialize new soy-based products, including DEWALT® biodegradable bar and chain oil, WD-40® rust remover soak, and Roof Maxx®. These innovative products are creating new uses for soy while increasing demand across industrial and consumer markets.
Additionally, efforts to expand market access continue through trade teams, global engagement and support for animal agriculture and biofuels. By connecting Ohio soy with global demand and supporting growth across multiple sectors, these investments help strengthen market opportunities for soybean farmers.
“Without the checkoff, the soy-based biofuels industry would not exist, which would eliminate a substantial portion of our bushel price.”
– Tyler Miller, Ohio Soybean Council Trustee, Crawford County
Advancing Research
Checkoff investments in research are focused on delivering practical, field-tested solutions to real production challenges. By supporting research at The Ohio State University, these projects are helping improve yields, reduce input costs, and equip farmers with knowledge they can use on their operations.
Current research projects are addressing key issues such as phosphorus management to improve nutrient efficiency, herbicide resistance and the spread of waterhemp, and the use of technology to support replanting decisions and crop management.
Education and Outreach
In addition to market development and research, checkoff investments support local outreach and education efforts that keep farmers informed and consumers connected to modern agriculture. Through programs like GrowNextGen, the Ohio Soybean Council works with teachers and students across the state to increase understanding of today’s farming practices while supporting workforce development. By sharing research results, providing timely information and connecting farmers with resources, these efforts help farmers make informed decisions on their operations. From field-level insights to broader industry updates, outreach efforts ensure farmers have access to the knowledge needed to respond to changing conditions and opportunities.
From research in the field to expanding markets at home and abroad, the Ohio soybean checkoff continues to focus on delivering value to soybean farmers across the state.
